what is Educational therapy?

Educational therapy is a specialized form of intervention that combines educational strategies with therapeutic techniques to help individuals with learning differences overcome challenges by addressing the underlying cognitive and emotional processes that affect their learning, providing personalized strategies to improve academic performance and overall learning abilities; unlike traditional tutoring, it focuses on not just subject matter but also how a student learns and processes information.

Key points about educational therapy:

  • Beyond academics:

While academic skills are addressed, educational therapy also targets underlying cognitive issues like attention, memory, executive functioning, and social-emotional development.

  • Collaboration with other professionals:

Therapists often work with teachers, parents, and other specialists to ensure comprehensive support.

  • Focus on strategies:

The goal is to teach students effective learning strategies to manage their challenges and become more independent learners.

  • Individualized approach:

Educational therapists create customized remediation plans based on each student's specific needs, learning style, and challenges.

Who might benefit from educational therapy:

  • Students with learning differences like dyslexia

  • Individuals with ADHD or other attention difficulties

  • Children struggling with decoding, reading rate and comprehension as well as writing skills

  • Students experiencing academic anxiety or low self-esteem related to learning

Some of the training and programs we use are: Orton-Gillingham (IMSE), UFLI Foundations, the Wilson Reading System, Great Leaps, the Barton Reading System, Lindamood Bell / Seeing Stars, Making Math Real, Handwriting Without Tears, The Writing Skills Series by Diana Hanbury King, Read Naturally and SIMS.
